In This Month's Spotlight

LYT Go Wilde

Limerick Youth Theatre is a company of young performers, dancers, writers, designers, directors, producers and filmmakers.

Why are they in the spotlight?....

LYT are on stage in March with Dorian , an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. It is presented as a sequence of scenes and images inspired by the themes of the novel and not a straight narrative telling of it. Using dance, dialogue, film, and music, the piece will challenge as well as provide an entertaining response to the original material. It is divided into five sections, each exploring a different theme of the novel but loosely following the narrative; Dorian's Wish, Dorian's World, Dorian the Murderer, Dorian's Death. The production is the result of over 27 hours of rehearsals held over 9 weeks of workshops led by actor and director Myles Breen.

The Background.....

LYT runs a workshop/performance training programme over a two-year course of membership. The programme is open to 16-23 year olds and auditions take place in September each year. Weekly workshops are led by professional directors, actors, artists and technicians. The programme includes physical theatre, improvisation, approaches to text and character, theatre history and production skills. July and August are spent rehearsing a full-scale theatre production, staged at the Belltable Arts Centre in late August. Participants also pick up valuable work experience along the way!

Limerick Youth Theatre also has a thriving Outreach programme with two projects in Moyross; the National Youth Council funded Vlogging Porject and the Limerick Regeneration and Irish Youth Foundation-funded Back to School Project with Corpus Christi National School. In addition LYT has recently launched an outreach project designed to provide a rich and challenging works experience module for transition year students. A Mans Game, written and directed by Paul Brennan, will be performed at the Belltable Arts Centre in April.
